Bad Breath: Symptoms & Home Remedies
Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be an embarrassing problem, but it can be overcome.
It is a common problem that affects 1/3 of the general population. Often we don’t know we have halitosis until someone has the courage to tell us. It is a crippling social problem.
What causes bad breath?
In 90% of cases, bad breath is caused by a buildup of sulphur producing bacteria in the mouth. Commons causes are:
- Poor oral hygiene
- Gum disease
- Dry mouth
- Chronic sinus problems
- Lung or stomach diseases
- Uncontrolled diabetes
Quick fixes for bad breath, such as mouthwashes, mints, chewing gum and other masking substances only cover up the smell and do not address the underlying problem.
Tips to improve bad breath
- Brush your teeth morning and night with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. The teeth, gums and tongue should all be brushed.
- Daily flossing.
- Drink plenty of water. The mouth should be kept moist by regularly sipping or rinsing with water.
- Limiting the intake of coffee and alcohol which can worsen bad breath.
- Clean your mouth after consuming milk products, fish and meat.
- Chew sugar-free gum after eating high-sugar or starchy foods to help stimulate saliva.
- Quitting smoking.
If your bad breath persists, you should consult a dentist for a proper clean and an examination to determine the source of your bad breath.
